MP warnings over Post Office Card Account

MP HELEN JONES has warned that thousands of people in Warrington risk losing their Post Office Card Accounts if the government does not make a decision soon.
The government has yet to decide on a replacement for the account due to run out in 2015.
Figures obtained by Helen Jones, through a parliamentary question, show that there are 9,540 benefit accounts in Warrington including 3,970 people who have their state pension paid that way and 1,260 accounts for disability living allowance.
Helen Jones said: “Many people who don’t have a bank account find a Post Office Card Account easy and convenient. Often these are people with very little income, including pensioners.
“So far the government has refused to say whether these accounts will continue after next year. This is very worrying for people who rely on them as a way to get access to their money. They don’t have enough for the banks to be interested in them and they value being able to get their money from the Post Office.
“We need a quick decision from the government on continuing the Post Office Card Account so that people know where they stand.”
