ECO Stars scheme comes to Warrington

WARRINGTON Borough Council has become the first authority in the North West to join ECO Stars.
ECO Stars is a scheme that encourages organisations to make their vehicle fleets as environment-friendly as possible – and awards between one and five stars to a company according to how well it meets the ECO Stars criteria. Fuel efficiency in turn helps the company to reduce its costs.
A special event was held at Warrington’s Parr Hall on Wednesday, when representatives from the council awarded certificates to companies which had signed up.
The companies taking part in the Warrington launch ranged from PepsiCo to local secure transport provider VanArak Ltd.
Other local members of ECO Stars include Asda and Sainsbury’s. Members of ECO Stars schemes elsewhere in the country include B&Q, National Express and Superdrug.
The council’s executive board member for transport and climate change, Cllr Linda Dirir, said: “Taking part in the ECO Stars scheme will help the council deliver on its very demanding target of 40% reductions in CO2 emissions.”
Executive board member for environment and public protection, Cllr David Keane, added: “We’re working very hard with our partners to improve air quality in Warrington. Having bad quality air shortens lifetimes by several months, so it’s something we’re doing our best to sort out.”
