Boost for tip site campaigners

WARRINGTON’S controversial Arpley Landfill site will soon be receiving no waste from the neighbouring borough of Halton.
The news – which strengthens the case for closing the site – comes in a letter to Warrington South MP David Mowat from the leader of Halton Council, Cllr Rob Polhill.
Mr Mowat said: “This is an extremely significant development. The key argument over Arpley has been over where Merseyside and Halton would dump their waste if the site closed.
“I congratulate Halton Borough Council for following Warrington’s lead and reducing their reliance on landfill. I hope that the site can now be finally closed so that the families who live nearby can get on with their lives once again.”
Mr Mowat said there was now even less demand for Arpley than there was when Warrington Borough Council refused permission for the site to continue operating.
Back in February, Mr Mowat wrote to Cllr Polhill and the leader of the six local authorities in the Merseyside area who send waste to Arpley, asking them to consider the effect their waste strategies were having on Warrington.
Since last year, Arpley has received no waste from Warrington.
Mr Mowat has now written to the planning inspector considering the appeal against Warrington’s refusal to ensure he is aware of the latest developments.
He said: “I welcome this news – and congratulate Halton on their decision.”
