Town back to winning ways

WARRINGTON Town got back to winning ways with a 1-2 victory at near neighbours Trafford taking the lead after just 27 seconds!
Town had the best possible start to the Evo-Stik Division One North game when winger Chris Gahgan (pictured) slotted home on loan striker Allan Collins’ low cross from within the six yard box.
The home side almost fell further behind in the 9th minute, when Collins capitalised on a mistake in the home defence, only to see his shot well saved by Trafford keeper Tom Read. The home side were indebted to Read shortly afterwards, as he denied Town another opportunity, by cutting out Anthony Hickey’s right wing cross.
The home side got into the game and winger Callum Byrne saw his long range effort tipped onto the crossbar by Paul Pritchard, with the same player shooting across the face of the Town goal shortly afterwards, as the home side enjoyed their best of the game. Shortly before the half hour, Town had what looked like a certain penalty turned down, when Trafford’s former Town midfielder Mark Keddie appeared to handle a goalbound effort in his penalty area, but referee Mr Lucas waved away the Town player’s appeals.
Warrington increased their lead on the half hour, when Skipper Mike Tomlinson met Louis Corrigan’s near post corner with a flicked diving header that flew into the corner of the net. Gahgan had the chance to increase Town’s lead further shortly afterwards turning the last defender, but saw his shot well saved by Read with his legs. The last chance of the half fell to the home side but a scramble in the box saw Tom Hardwick clear the ball behind his own goal for a corner.
Town started the second half the better of the two sides, with Collins seeing his long range drive go narrowly over the crossbar with Read beaten. Trafford’s prolific striker Scott Barlow went close soon after for the hosts, forcing Pritchard into a fine save when one on one. The same player shot over soon afterwards when he really should have hit the back of the net.Barlow made it a hat trick of missed chances soon after, when Pritchard was again equal to his effort. Collins had the chance to sew the game up just before the half way mark when he cut inside when well placed and shot well wide. With twenty minutes to go, Town once again had the chance to sew the game up, but no-one could connect with Mike Duffy’s hard hit centre. The home side were putting Town under more and more pressure looking to get back into the game, full back Paul Ashton seeing his long range effort well saved by Pritchard, before they had a goal ruled out for offside shortly afterwards. When the home side did find a way past Pritchard, Tom Hardwick was on hand to rescue Town and clear the ball off his line. Trafford eventually managed to pull a goal back, with seven minutes to go through substitute Andy Lundy, whose header from Ashton’s cross found its way beyond Pritchard’s desperate dive. Collins could have sewn the game up with four minutes to go, when he headed winger Anthony Hickey’s cross against the crossbar, and then, gathered the rebound only to head against the crossbar once again.
The last chance of the game fell to Keddie, who shot weakly wide when well placed.
Warrington deserved their win but nearly paid the penalty for not killing the game off.
