Police double detection rate for burglaries

POLICE detection rates for household burglaries last month were an outstanding 86 per cent.
The performance, which comes on top of a doubling of the detection rate for the period April last year to February this year, has been praised by Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer (pictured).
He said: “This is due to some excellent police work including the arrest of a team of burglars who had been active across the county.”
Last summer, Mr Dwyer expressed concern at the number of household burglaries the police were detecting.
He said: “I challenged Cheshire Constabulary to increase their detection rates for burglary. Between the period of November 2012 – March 2013 the rate stood at 10 per cent, which I felt was inadequate.
“Cheshire Constabulary rose to the challenge and the detection rate for the period April 2013 – February 2014 has doubled to 20 per cent, and of significant note, the detection rate for February 2014 was an outstanding 86 per cent.
“This improvement has come about as a result of changes in the work practices which were put in place after an initial visit from HM Inspectorate of Constabulary, who I called in for advice as to what should be happening.
“I am now awaiting HM Inspectorate of Constabulary to update me on matters, but I am delighted with Cheshire Constabulary’s response to the challenge. I’m not complacent, and there is still more work to be done, but all signs show that things are moving in the right direction.”
