TOWN Hall chiefs at Warrington say a drive to stamp out fly tipping in one of the borough’s blackspot areas has proved a great success.
The rubbish has gone – and the council only had to issue only one fixed penalty notice.
Cllr David Keane (pictured), the borough council’s lead member for environment and public protection, said: : “We surveyed residents in the area and 65 per cent of them said fly tipping was a big problem.”
The area targeted was Bewsey and Whitecross and the council wrote to all households in the relevant streets – Fox Street, Wellfield Street, Kimberley Street and Whitecross Road.
Then a team of neighbourhood wardens, council recycling officers and staff from Golden Gates Housing Trust went door-to-door, providing advice on recycling and telling people how to report fly tipping and dog fouling.
Cllr Keane said: “This took three weeks and our approach to working closely with residents seems to have worked. In an area where two-thirds of residents had said fly tipping was a problem, we only had to issue one fixed-penalty notice.
“Of course we must not be complacent, so we acknowledge that there is still more to be done. Further work will take place in a different area of Whitecross this month.”
The council continues to encourage people to report fly tipping via the council website, by email to [email protected] or by phoning 01925 443322.
The one £50 fixed penalty notice was sent to a resident of Whitecross Road who was identified being responsible for dumping three black bags. The penalty has been paid.
