Compost give-away a great success

HUNDREDS of green fingered residents turned up with their shovels and spades to get their share of free compost at a great give-away at the weekend.
A staggering 20 tonnes of compost were given away during the event at Victoria Park – that’s the equivalent of 40,000 bags of sugar!
On top of that, members of the council’s recycling team who organised the event are also pleased to report that they handed out 60 compost bins.
The freebie coincided with the start of the council’s garden waste collection service this week. Your green bin will be collected on the same day as your blue bin from 5 March onwards.
And you can now learn how to compost by checking out the council’s latest video ‘How to make compost’ at www.warrington.gov.uk/compost.
Cllr David Keane, executive board member for environment and public protection, said: “What a fantastic morning and we are delighted that so many residents came to this event and I also want to say a big thank you to Whitemoss, the company that composts all our green waste, as they provided the compost. Composting is a great way of transforming kitchen and garden waste into a valuable resource so I hope more people are encouraged to give it a go. You can even check out our latest video to learn how to do it.”
