A WARRINGTON woman fraudulently obtained benefit totalling £18,861 as a single parent by failing to declare that her partner had moved into her home.
Gayle Riley, 39, of Cotswold Road, Orford appeared at Halton Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to three offences of benefit fraud.
She was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, suspended for two years and ordered to repay the money, plus costs of £580.
The court was told Riley claimed the money as a single parent and failed to disclose that her partner had moved in with her.
She claimed ££8,629 housing benefit and £1,816 council tax benefit from Warrington Borough Council and £8,416 income support from the Department of Work and Pensions that she was not entitled to.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the council’s benefits manager, said: “All benefit theft is crime. There are no exceptions and that is why the council is determined to bring fraudsters to justice”
