GGHT support Paralympian

GOLDEN Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) have become the latest organisation to support Paralympian Adrian Derbyshire’s “Going the Extra Mile” Hand Cycle Campaign.
The British wheelchair fencing champion, who is a GGHT tenant and ambassador for Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation, can now go that extra mile during his mission to educate children and students on hate crime and raise awareness of disabilities.
To help with this mission, the Trust has donated £2,500 towards the cost of the hand cycle and campaign. The campaign will see Adrian cycling to schools, clubs and colleges talking to children and students about the affects Hate Crime has on its victims. He will also be looking to help promote participation in sport, health & wellbeing and being active.
Adrian will be travelling over 1,000 miles on his hand cycle over the coming months, the equivalent of 1 marathon a day, as he promoted the campaign throughout the UK.
Adrian, who has won two gold and three silver medals in his career and is the only person in the UK to have carried the Olympic Torch as well as being involved in the Paralympic Lantern Celebrations in 2012, will visit a number of schools, colleges and universities across Cheshire before starting his tour of the UK. He will be taking along his medals, Olympic Torch & Paralympic Lantern for the children to hold as it is the only one in circulation in the UK.
He will also use the bike in distance events, like the English half marathon and will be aiming to raise money for charities when he competes.
Adrian commented: “GGHT’s motto is that they ‘invest in neighbourhoods’ and this has been proven by GGHT getting involved and sponsoring my Hate Crime, Disability Awareness Hand Cycle Campaign. Schools and neighbourhoods around Warrington and Cheshire are being targeted to educate children about serious issues such as the affects of being a victim of a Hate Crime and GGHT have offered their support in helping me to achieve my goal.”
Peter Mercer, GGHT Chief Executive said: “Adrian is a real inspiration and I am delighted that the Trust have been able to support him as a tenant of ours in his campaign. The bike will be a real talking point when Adrian visits local schools and clubs and will give Adrian the chance to get across serious messages about health, wellbeing and hate crime.”
