WARRINGTON Young Labour (WYL) has been awarded the title “Best New Young Labour Group” at the National Youth Conference of the Labour Party in Bradford.
The group won the prestigious award for their swift growth in becoming the largest political youth group in Warrington and one of the most active Young Labour groups in the country.
Forming the largest delegation at the conference from any town or city, members of the local Labour youth wing engaged in policy forums, liberation caucuses, speech writing workshops and debates throughout the weekend.
Members also met Rt Hon Harriet Harman MP, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, who praised their efforts to empower young people to participate in politics.
Tom Jennings, chairman of WY Labour and borough council candidate for Grappenhall and Thelwall Ward in the May elections, said:
“Youth Conference is the highlight of the Young Labour calendar, and we’re extremely delighted to have our efforts recognised at a national level.”
At the event, members from across the country pass policy motions and lay out campaign priorities for Young Labour, as well as hearing from high profile speakers, participating in training sessions, and enjoy socials that give members a chance to meet other young activists and politicians from across the country.
Inspired by the conference, Warrington Young Labour now seeks to expand its membership further to create a unified youth community through continuous campaigning, altruistic voluntarism, and unique social events.
Anyone aged 14-26 years old living in Warrington can join the group for as little as £1 a year, at www.warringtonsouth.org/younglabour.
Nick Bent, Labour Parliamentary candidate for Warrington South said:
“Life can be challenging for young people today but this group are determined to use their democratic rights to shape their own destiny and to encourage others to do the same – I’m really proud of their positive energy and spirit.”
