FORMER Warrington Paralympian and Great Britain sword fencer Adrian Derbyshire is getting on his trike to promote hate crime and disability issues thanks to a £5,000 donation from Cheshire’s Crime Prevention Fund.
Adrian successfully applied to the Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, John Dwyer’s Crime Prevention Fund to help him with his campaign to raise awareness and encourage more people to report hate crime.
Adrian visited Cheshire Police Headquarters to unveil his hand trike to Assistant Chief Constable Ruth Purdie and Commissioner John Dwyer (pictured above).
The trike features the logos of the companies/individuals who have sponsored and supported Adrian – including the Commissioner and Constabulary logos.
Adrian’s project involves him travelling around Warrington, and then to Lands End on his hand trike, visiting schools to raise awareness of his campaign, promoting disability awareness and encouraging a “Can Do” and “I Can” attitude.
Adrian said: “It’s support from the Commissioner and Cheshire Police as a whole which inspires me to continue my Ambassador role regarding hate crime and the promotion of reporting it.
“The Crime Prevention Funds given provide me the opportunity to speak to more children, communities and schools; it allows me to reach out to those who need support the most.
“Since I’ve been awarded the funds I’ve visited schools across the county to raise awareness, and the response has been a positive one.”
Mr Dwyer added: “I think this is an excellent project and the work Adrian does to raise awareness of hate crime is inspirational.
“I want to make sure that victims of hate crime feel confident enough to report incidents to the police, so they can be dealt with in the appropriate manner.
“I want to wish Adrian all the best with his campaign.”
