Couple celebrate over 70 years of marriage

TWO residents at a care home in Culcheth are celebrating their 72nd wedding anniversary during National Marriage Week.
Childhood sweethearts Ruth and George Waterhouse first met in the school playground in Bradford nearly 80 years ago and have remained happily together ever since – still enjoying life today in the CLS-run Holcroft Grange home.
Sharing stories of the past with fellow residents, 93 year-old George, originally from Northamptonshire (though later moving to Bradford at 14), recalled the period before the two were married. George would regularly travel from Northampton, where he had returned to work as a member of the Royal Air Force, all the way up to York to visit Ruth where she waitressed in her sister’s café – covering an impressive 300 miles each time!
Eventually, however, the separation proved too much and George popped the question, asking Ruth to take his hand in marriage and to move in with him. In fact, when asked what the best thing about married life is, George says: living together and sharing a home – which they still do to this day. 92 year-old Ruth, originally from Bradford, agreed, adding that the secret to a long and happy marriage is: taking care and looking after one another.
Ruth went on to say: “Everyone at Holcroft made such an effort on our special day, spoiling us with flowers and chocolate, and even a bottle of wine! We’ve also been swapping stories of married life with the other residents and sharing wedding day memories – it’s been a lovely few days.”
Pauline Shaw, Home Manager at Holcroft Grange, said: “Such a long and happy marriage is something extremely special and it was great to hear Ruth and George sharing their story with everyone. We do all that we can to celebrate significant occasions like these and both Ruth and George seemed truly touched by the effort that all the residents and staff had put in.”
