Businesses set for Town Hall presentation

BUSINESSES that help tackle alcohol-related crime and disorder will be presented with certificates by the mayor at the Town Hall today.
They are part of the ArcAngel initiative, through which the local authority and police are aiming to help areas be safe and welcoming.
The initiative seeks:

  • To reduce crime and antisocial behaviour and improve health by encouraging responsible drinking, discouraging binge drinking and drinking in public places.
  • To give recognition to venues that adopt good practice and encourage others to follow their lead.
  • To target hotspot locations and prolific and persistent offenders of alcohol-related violent crime.
  • To help reduce the number of incidents of alcohol-related serious woundings, common assaults and A&E admissions.
  • To improve care and support for victims and witnesses of alcohol-related violent crime.
  • To help people feel safer and reduce negative perceptions during a night out and encourage families and mixed-age groups to enjoy the early evening and late night economy.
  • To raise public awareness of the issue of alcohol-related violence and disorder and the penalties that will be imposed against offenders.
  • To reduce the availability of alcohol to underage drinkers, to educate young people and to reduce the risk ratings of licensed premises.

By participating in the scheme, a licensee can expect:

  • A closer working relationship with and support from partners throughout the scheme.
  • Promotion of standards and premises by partnerships in joint publicity.
  • A reassuring environment for themselves and their staff.
  • Enhanced training on licensing laws.
  • Trading standards training on preventing underage sales.
  • Standards of acceptable behaviour set for customers.

Customers will be able to expect:

  • Reassurance that statutory authorities and the licensing trade are working together to improve safety on the streets and within premises.
  • A safer environment as a result of enforced standards.
  • A clear understanding of what is acceptable behaviour on their part.
