Aftermath of the storm

TODAY dawned almost like a spring morning in Warrington – a remarkable change from last night’ storm.
Many were left clearing up damage caused by the high winds – but Warrington actually escaped the worst of the weather.
There was traffic chaos after the M6 Thewall Viaduct was closed.
Warrington Central station was temporarily closed while emergency repairs were carried out to a damaged roof.
Trains were also delayed on the West Coast Main Line.
A number of trees were toppled, including one which struck a school bus in London Road, Stockton Heath which fortunately had no children aboard at the time although the driver received minor injuries.
Other trees were blown over in London Road, Appleton, Warrington Road, Culcheth, Stockport Road, Thelwall, and Cherry Lane and Eagle Brow, Lymm.
An 80-year-old tree in Brookfield Road, Lymm, crashed down between two houses. A few feet one way or the other would have resulted in a house being damaged. Elsewhere, a number of buildings were damaged in various parts of the borough, including the town centre.
A party of performing arts students from Warrington’s Priestley College were stranded at Arley Hall after a power failure meant a scheduled dance performance had to be cancelled.
The youngsters had been taken to the venue by bus early for rehearsals to take place but eventually returned by bus after the show was called off.
But life went on as usual for the most part – and there were no reports of serious injuries.
The Warrington-based Centenary Theatre Company, who were performing the comedy “Run for Your Wife” at Runcorn’s Brindley Theatre were worried that attendances might be hit as a result of Warrington people deciding not to make the journey were relieved when the majority decided “the show must go on” and turned up.
The weather forecast for today in Warrington is for sunny periods, remaining dry.
But it’s back to rain tomorrow, with heavy rain forecast from midday onwards – and more rain on Saturday.
