THE Highways Agency has closed the M6 Thelwall Viaduct, near Warrington because of traffic hazards caused by 80mph winds.
A speed limit had been in force on the exposed viaduct for some time, and drivers of highsided vehicles or those towing caravans had been advised to find alternative routes.
But eventually the decision was made to close the viaduct.
Police said a number of other roads throughout Cheshire had also been closed.
They said a high number of 999 calls were being received from people wanting to report fallen trees, etc. But they stressed that the public should use the 101 number for these calls to leave the 999 lines free for more urgent calls.
Supt Beverley Raistrick is

overseeing the police response to the extreme weather.
She said: ” Police advice is to be mindful of the unusually high winds that

Cheshire is experiencing, and take action.

This may be delaying a non essential journey to another day, or

considering your route home from work – is it the right route for today,

or should you consider an alternative?
