A TEENAGE boxer from Warrington has won the Merseyside and Cheshire Welterweight Youth Title at a new tournament held at Croxteth Leisure Centre, in Liverpool.
Billy Potter, aged 16, who boxes for Hook and Jab ABC, Warrington, beat Everton Red Triangle’s Reece Jameson to a unanimous points victory.
The pair served up an all-action affair to an excited crowd, standing toe-to-toe for three hard-fought three minute rounds.
While the action was aggressive, the pair also showed quality technical
ability too, with both demonstrating exceptional compact boxing skills.
The bout was the first ever Merseyside and Cheshire Youth Tournament.
As well as being a new tournament, it also represented a significant first for Billy’s boxing club, with him being the first fighter to represent them under their new name of Hook and Jab ABC, having been known for 23 years as Bridgefoot Police Amateur Boxing Club.
Billy Potter is a former semi-finalist at the prestigious Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE) Schoolboy Championships tournament, the famous national competition that has been a springboard to success for many of Britain’s most celebrated boxing stars.
Coach Derek Groarke said: “Billy is an exceptional talent and he proved this, in what was a very close fought bout.
“Billy was pushed all the way by Reece, right until the final bell, but in the end his skills and commitment rightly saw him named the winner of the title. The fight gave him the opportunity to test himself against a quality opponent, an invaluable experience as he aims for amateur boxing success.”
Derek added: “We recently decided to rename our amateur boxing club, so it would share the same name as the gym we train at – Hook and Jab. Billy’s fight was the first ever one under this new moniker, so we are delighted to mark this special milestone with his title success.”
