Law firm releases shocking statistics on post-traumatic stress disorder

A LOCAL firm of personal injury specialists has released a series of shocking statistics about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Johnson Law are hoping to raise awareness of the condition which can have a devastating effect on sufferers and their families, and make sufferers aware of the help available to them.
PTSD is most commonly associated with ex-servicemen, and since the First World War has also been known as ‘shell shock’.
65,000 WW1 veterans were still being treated for the condition ten years after the war ended. This may be explained by the feelings of embarrassment that many sufferers experience, with over 93 per cent of veterans admitting to being ashamed about mental health problems.
PTSD continues to affect military personnel, as well as the general population today, with 273 cases being reported in 2012 and a 12 per cent rise in cases predicted every year until at least 2018.
Speaking on behalf of Johnson Law, David Johnson said: “Despite the association with the armed forces, one in three people will develop PTSD following a traumatic event. It’s not a condition that’s restricted to one group of people, it can affect anyone.”
Symptoms of PTSD include re-living traumatic events, feelings of isolation, depression and phobias, with 62 per cent of sufferers also dealing with the effects of substance abuse.
David Johnson added: “The impact of PTSD on sufferers cannot be underestimated. 40 soldiers died serving in Afghanistan in 2012, but during the same year 50 soldiers and veterans committed suicide.
“And with under 18s the most likely to suffer from PTSD when they leave the forces, this is an issue that we can’t ignore.”
If you or a loved one are suffering from PTSD then help is available. Three out of four veterans resolve their symptoms with counselling, and many are entitled to compensation.
Johnson Law Solicitors have over 50 years of experience dealing with cases of PTSD, and have successfully got their clients compensation to cover loss of earnings, future loss of earnings, payments for future medical assistance and possible rehabilitation costs.
David Johnson said: “We ensure every case is handled sensitively and can arrange for you to be put in touch with local support groups to assist in your recovery, so if you are living with this condition, either as a sufferer or a carer, I would urge you to get in touch.”
