Shoppers give help to the needy

KIND–hearted customers at Co-operative stores across Warrington helped collect 80 bags of shopping for some of the most vulnerable and needy people in the town.
They each bought an extra item during their weekly shop – and the goods were donated to Warrington Foodbank, wich provides emergency food supplies to prevent local people going hungry.
The Co-operative launched a collection point at its Knutsford Road store in Grappenhall in May last year, and has since increased its support of the charity by setting up the initiative at its food stores in Kingsway South, Stockton Heath, Latchford, The Bridges, and Dudlows Green.
Over the last eight months the Grappenhall store has donated more than 240 bags of food to the Foodbank, including non-perishable and in-date goods, such as tinned food, dried pasta, cooking sauces, tea, coffee and toiletries.
David Appleton, manager of the Co-operative Food store in Grappenhall, said: “We are delighted with the kind support from our customers, whose generous donations have helped Warrington Foodbank.
“The 240 bags we’ve presented have made a real difference to local families, many of who are feeling the strain because of the economic climate, and enabled them to put food on the table.”
Warrington Foodbank, which launched in 2012, provides three days worth emergency food to its clients, who are identified by frontline care professionals, including doctors, health visitors, social workers, CAB and the police.
John Dolan, project co-ordinator at Warrington Foodbank, said: “The collection points at The Co-operative’s food stores in Warrington have exceeded all our expectations. These kind donations have directly helped those people living in food crisis and, more importantly, prevented some local families from going hungry.”
