Psychology service for stroke victims

A NEW psychology service, which will benefit people struggling with emotional problems and depression after a stroke, is to be launched in Warrington.
It will be run by Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust in association with Warrington Clinical Commissioning Group.
Local patients and healthcare staff joined Warrington North MP Helen Jones and Stroke Association regional head of operations Chris Larkin at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub to officially launch the new NHS service.
Staff from the new service will be based at the hub but will work in health centres and homes across the borough raising awareness about the psychological effects of stroke. The service will offer a range of general psychological support as well as more specialist assessment and therapy depending upon the needs of each patient.
Dr Carol Sampson, a consultant clinical neuropsychologist for Bridgewater Community Trust, said: ““It is estimated that 14,600 people in the North West suffer a stroke each year and currently over 157,000 people are living with the effects of a stroke.
“These effects often include depression as well as emotional and behaviour changes. The new stroke psychology service will give people in the borough access to the essential psychological care and advice they need after a stroke which can prevent further issues developing and ultimately improve their quality of life.
“If you feel the service could benefit you or a family member please speak to your local GP or the Stroke Association and they can refer you into the service. You can also call 01925 251366 or visit www.bridgewater.nhs.uk to find out more.”
