A FILM telling the story of Warrington’s part in the Rugby League World Cup is to premiere at the Pyramid Arts Centre on Thursday, January 23 at 7pm.
“Warrington’s World Cup” was made by a partnership of students and staff at the University of Chester’s Warrington Campus, Culture Warrington and Warrington’s Rugby League World Cup Steering Group.
The film was initiated, made and edited by university staff and students working at The Hot Room – the university’s own production company.
It features cultural aspects of the town’s preparations for the RLWC and the impact the event had on Warrington.
From the rugby themed “Primrose and Blue” dance performance, to school children welcoming the Samoan Team to Warrington with the “Hakka”, culminating in the ambitious Window on Warrington production involving more than 500 performers from across the town on both of the international match days.
Other highlights include the civic welcome from the council, the Trophy Tour around the town, training sessions with the Samoan team, the moving Faith Service at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and two of the most outstanding games of the tournament.
The project was jointly funded by the university and Culture Warrington, a charitable trust delivering arts, heritage and events across Warrington.
Jan Souness, managing director at Culture Warrington and chairman of the Warrington Rugby League World Cup Consortia, said: “We wanted to capture Warrington’s World Cup year – the preparations, build up and excitement in the town leading to our opening and quarter final game. From cultural organisations to businesses and faith sector organisations, fans, university staff, students and members of the council, everyone has supported the games coming to Warrington.
“The DVD will be a great finale for the three years of this very important project for the town and a wonderful World Cup year.”
The film will be premiered at the Pyramid Arts Centre on January 23 at 7pm, when copies of the DVD will be on sale.
