Apartments approved – despite bat worries

PLANS for the construction of 54 one and two bedroom sheltered apartments at Penketh have been given the go-ahead by Warrington – despite concerns there could be bats in adjacent trees.
The borough council’s planning committee approved the scheme, on the site of the former Penketh Court, in Farnworth Road, when it came before members for a second time.
On the first occasion it had been deferred because a report on the possibility of roosting bats in nearby trees had not been prepared.
Penketh Court – a sheltered housing unit – was demolished some time ago.
Two neighbours lodged objections on the grounds the new, three-storey development would be “overbearing.”
But planning officers said the scheme was “sympathetic” to surrounding properties and could be satisfactorily integrated into the street scene without causing harm to the character of the area.
