MP blasts education funding cuts

MP Helen Jones says funding cuts in Further Eduction will damage the life chances of young people in Warrington.
From September, funding for students who are already 18 will be cut by 17.5%, and Jones says the government must think again.
The Warrington North MP said: “First we had the abolition of EMA, now we have further funding cuts for those studying in Warrington Collegiate and similar institutions.
“The government talks about valuing vocational education but this 17.5% cut shows that they talk the talk but they don’t walk the walk.
“71% of those affected are studying at Level 3, not taking A-level resits as the Government insists.
“Some will have transferred to college at 17, perhaps after receiving poor advice on their choice of studies initially.
“With more 18 year olds studying in colleges than in schools, our F.E. sector will be badly hit.
“This proposal is badly thought-out, not based on proper evidence and will damage the life chances of many young people. The Government should think again.”
The cuts by the Department of Education are to help contribute to reducing the overall public sector budget deficit, according to a letter distributed to schools and colleges before Christmas.
