Police to trial body worn cameras in town

BODY worn cameras are to be used by police at Warrington in a pilot scheme to see how effective they can be when used by officers tackling crime.
The trial will run over the next couple of months and will involve 24 cameras – mainly in the town centre area.
They will be primarily used to tackle issues affecting the night time economy and will be overtly used.
Where possiblde, people will be told that the cameras are recording.
The trial has been welcomed by Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer.
He said: “I think piloting worn body cameras in Cheshire is an excellent idea.
“I think these cameras will prove themselves invaluable when it comes to prosecuting offenders who try every trick in the book to get off. It’s hard to argue against an image or video footage of you being caught in the act.
“Using this kind of technology will ultimately help the Constabulary make Cheshire a safer place to live.”
The cameras cost £299 each. Twelve will be used by Warrington Town Centre’s Policing Team and 12 by Warrington Central’s Policing Team.
