New canal bridge approved

PLANNERS at Warrington have given the go-ahead for a new lifting bridge over the Sankey-St Helens Canal at Fiddler’s Ferry.
The bridge will replace an old bridge which collapsed when a lorry was crossing it in September last year – cutting off businesses on the nearby Riverside Trading Estate.
A temporary fixed bridge is in use at present but a lifting bridge is required because of long-term proposals to re-open the canal for leisure boating.
Councillors decided that although the new bridge would be more visible than either its predecessor or the temporary bridge, because of its superstructure, a lifting bridge was essential.
Although the bridge superstructure and a small plant building would have an impact on the openness of the Green Belt, any such harm would clearly be outweighed by the need to restore a crossing point at this point on the canal.
The canal dates from 1757 and is one of the oldest canals in Britain. It has been disused since around 1963 but there are long terms to re-open it for pleasure craft.
