Youth cafe project approved

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have given a resounding vote of confidence to an innovative youth project which is helping to keep young people off the streets.
Members of the borough council’s planning committee approved plans for an open, cafe-style space at the rear of the Broomfields Leisure Centre at Appleton.
A number of nearby residents who objected because of fears of noise and anti-social behaviour attended the meeting to voice their concerns.
But police officers also attended to produce statistics showing there was no problem of anti-social behaviour in the area.
The new facility is to be used by the Broomfields Youth Project, a charity consisting a partnership between Bridgewater High School, Cheshire Police, Live Wire leisure services and local churches.
The charity operates a youth club on Friday evenings.
Committee members visited the site before reaching a decision.
Appleton Parish Council supported the application.
Planning officers said the structure would be of a temporary nature and would be utilitarian in design and construction. While not of the highest architectural quality, it would harmonise with the design of the existing leisure centre.
The Broomfield Youth Project has the support of local police and two Police Community Support Officers are based at the leisure centre every Friday night.
