THE historic chapel at Warrington Cemetery has undergone a complete refurbishment to provide an appropriate setting for services and quiet reflection.
New energy efficient lighting and heating has been installed in the Grade 2 listed building, new carpets laid and the walls and gate repainted.
Members of community groups and staff from the Long Lane Garden Centre supported the improvement scheme by doing gardening work in the cemetery.
There have also been improvements to “The Forget me not Baby Garden” carried out in partnership with the Friends of The Forget me not Garden Baby Garden.
Cllr David Keane, the borough council’s lead member for environment and public protection said: “Colleagues who work at the cemetery are very proud to provide a place where relatives and friends can visit their loved ones in peaceful and pleasant surroundings.
“Not only do they deliver larger projects such as the refurbishment of the chapel but they also make small but important touches such as introducing wildflower areas and rose beds, which all contribute to the quality of the turf and garden areas.
“The partnership working that is clearly evident here is also a good model for how we can work well with community groups and reach our goals together.
“Everyone involved with the cemetery works continuously hard throughout the year to retain its national and prestigious Green Flag status and we are all very proud of this.”
