Warrington Town open up four point gap at top of the table

WARRINGTON Town showed their title credentials with a battling 2-0 victory away at Prescot Cables, which saw them open up a four point gap at the top of the table.
Despite being under pressure for long periods in the first half Warrington kept the hosts at bay through a combination of good defending and poor finishing.
Prescot thought they had taken the lead on 24 minutes but had an effort ruled off for off-side and then Phil Davies cleared off the line with his head on 33 minutes.
Five minutes before the break a rare Warrington attack saw Chris Gahgan slot the ball through for Liam Dawson (pictured top) to slide the ball past the keeper to make it 0-1 for Town.
On the stroke of half-time Dawson had a chance of a second but was denied by the keeper when through one on one.
Warrington were two up five minutes after the re-start as Dawson put Metcalfe clear in the box with a clear push in the back giving the referee little choice but to award a penalty.
Ciaran Kilheeney stepped up to cooly slot the ball home after sending the keeper the wrong way.
Substitute Aaron Bowen had a chance to make it three but saw his shot across the goal mouth come out off the post.
Town’s on loan keeper Josh Ollerenshaw then saved well with his feet on 76 minutes with the last real chance of the game.
Next up for Warrington is a trip to Clitheroe on Saturday, followed by the visit of Northwich Victoria on New Year’s Day.
