Campaign to end violence against women

MP Helen Jones and Warrington Wolves are supporting a campaign to end violence against women.
Up and down the country men will wear white ribbons to send a message to other men that it is never okay to physically or verbally abuse a woman, as part of the White Ribbon campaign.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones said: “It’s really great that men are taking responsibility for putting a stop to these horrific crimes. Each week 2 women in the UK are killed by a partner or ex. Every minute the police receive a call about domestic violence and every 9 minutes a woman is raped in Britain. These statistics are abhorrent.
“Most men out there are kind, decent human beings and would be appalled at this. However, we need those men to speak up and tell other men when their behaviour is wrong.”
In 2011/12, approximately 890 women in Warrington were the victims of domestic abuse and in the 12 months leading to June 2013 police recorded the same number of assaults.
A Warrington Wolves spokesperson said: “As a club with close community ties Warrington Wolves prides itself on supporting worthwhile causes. We hope that the presence of our players backing the campaign will help raise awareness of the valuable work done by all involved.”
Cheshire Police marked the start of the campaign by tweeting information about domestic abuse from the force’s Twitter account and encouraging people to speak out.
Assistant Chief Constable Ruth Purdie is the Force lead for domestic abuse. She said: “Cheshire Constabulary takes the issue of domestic abuse very seriously.
“Violence against women should not, cannot and will not be tolerated, by our staff or officers. This is why we are giving our full support to the White Ribbon Campaign – a campaign through which people around the world can openly and publicly proclaim their opposition to, and condemnation of, violence against women in all its forms.”
