Take care of waste during hot weather

6

WARRINGTON Borough Council is issuing guidance to residents on how to look after waste during the hot weather.
Cllr David Keane, executive board member for environment and public protection, said: “Unfortunately during the hot weather at this time of year flies can be attracted to waste and, although rare, maggots may develop.
“There are things all residents can do to prevent flies being attracted to and breeding in bins. All meat, fish and dairy waste should be wrapped and effectively secured – wrapping waste in newspaper and then a supermarket carrier bag provides a very effective barrier. Eat, cook and store food properly, or place it wrapped in the bin as soon as possible. Don’t leave food out in the kitchen.
“If you do get maggots you can pour a bleach solution over the contents of your bin. It is important to keep your bin clean and ensure that the lid is always properly closed.”
There is further information about taking care of waste on the council’s website at www.warrington.gov.uk.

  1. So the council which has called for supermarkets to stop giving away carrier bags now wants us to wrap our rubbish in those self same carrier bags? Why not just empty the bins often enough to prevent infestations instead?

  2. and no doubt you cycle to work and use your Toyota Prius at weekends too? The councillors have been telling us for years to put paper in the blue bins and waste in the black. Now that their crazy decision to change to weekly bin collections is starting to bite them they are advising us to wrap food in paper and then in a carrier bag and put this in the black bins…. They change their advice to suit their own stupid agendas. we should have weekly collections back and the councillors should all be sacked…. that will save a fortune….. If we have £700,000 to waste on 20 mph speed limits (which provide little or no proven benefits) they can afford to use some of the extra millions from all the council tax from the new estates in Bewsey, Chapelford, Battersby Lane etc. to collect the bins once a week. If no bin men have been sacked or had their hours reduced so what do they do all that they weren’t doing this time last year?

  3. A few thoughts, totally agree that WBC have wasted a large sum of money on 20mph, alas I was the only Councillor to openly oppose its roll-out, it seems that an important policy decision was determined by a Lymm resident without a democratic mandate. The change in the bin collection service has resulted in a substantial reduction in contracted in labour and that the service is now carried out by WBC employees and hence the cost savings. It is correct that WBC has received extra council tax income, which has been offset by reductions in grants from central government. This year WBC will spend about £420 million of which about £80 million will be paid by council tax income, the rest will be government grants, fees and charges. In the Ward that I represent I can say that to date I have had no problems with the introduction of the new alternate weekly collection service. And in all honesty the previous collection system will not be reintroduced, indeed as I understand it, all local authorities will change to the alternate weekly service in due course. Personally, and we are a household of four adults, I have had no problems with the black bin and it is normally less than a half full when I put it out, indeed sometimes just a quarter full, I have had no maggot or other problems and the lid is always kept fully closed. I am however aware that some households, albeit relatively few, are having difficulty. Support for those people is available, but it will not, as I understand it, include a weekly black bin collection. I hope that in England we do not stop free carrier bags, those who propose it clearly don’t do the weekly shop, I use the bags for waste and the surplus goes back to Morrisons for recycling. I do agree that the number of Councillors could be reduced, but that is a decision made by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England ( http://www.lgbce.org.uk for more info) As a Councillor ( as are all others) I am paid just over £8,000 pa less PAYE, in addition I receive an additional £8,800 as a Group Leader again less PAYE, I am grateful for that payment and do put in long hours as I am fortunate in having the time available. In May 2014 WBC voters will again have the opportunity to vote for a Councillor in most Wards.

    Kindest Regards

  4. Paul,…. I myself do not manage to fill the bins on a regular basis (except the green one as we have a large garden and hedges to keep in trim); but this is not the point. We, as tax paying residents are annually expected to cough up increases to council tax to cover these crazy council schemes such as the £700,000 wasted on 20mph signs (which are un policed and have yet to have any proven benefits other than to the ego of certain residents of the town)…. almost a MILLION pounds to sort out the removal of a roundabout and the installation of traffic lights at Westbrook and a Chief Executive that we do not need on £100,000 a year and no doubt all sorts of golden handshakes that were paid to get rid of the last one and her cronies…add to that the £700,000 to pay for a completely unnecessary Police Commissioner and his entourage and that is just 4 items of waste… and yet we are expected to put up with cuts to this essential frontline service as well as crap roads; un-coordinated roadwork’s which jam up the town for weeks and various other traffic lights and restrictions that come on when they are least needed and add to the mess. Now I; like you use supermarket carrier bags to wrap stuff in and yet we hear the advice being changed about re-cycling by the council; purely to suit their agendas and to fit in with the complete mess they have made with the weekly bin collections. When the weather has been as hot as it has; it should be a duty on the council to ensure that the risks involved with maggots and other vermin are reduced by increasing collections…..The argument about how many people live in a property by the way is completely irrelevant as you can have 4 adults living in a house who all go out to work all day and so generate no waste that needs disposing of at home during the day. A family of 4 people who don’t go out or don’t work during the day will generate more waste due to breakfast, lunch packaging etc…….. There are many areas of waste; unfortunately nobody seems to want to make the “tough decisions” that you politicians are always banging on about….. and lessons certainly haven’t been learned as far as I and many others can see…. As for May 2014….it can’t come soon enough!!!
