Honours even in Peace Cup

WARRINGTON Town’s annual Peace Cup encounter with Northern Ireland side Crewe United ended with honours even – which means the clubs again share the trophy.
A youthful Warrington side surprised their hosts with some slick passing and scored an early goal when Dylan Glass dummied the ‘keeper before rounding him and slotting home in the sixth minute.
Crewe could not get into their stride – Sam Houghton and Chris Bibby would not allow them to settle in midfield.
Danny Bruce began brightly and it wasn’t long before he was felled in the area when clean through.
Surprisingly, a penalty was not awarded – just one man in the ground did not think it a penalty.
Chris Bandell was most unfortunate to be called offside on two occasions when en route to goal but he managed to feed Glass for a second late in the first half. The Yellows went into the break 2-0 up.
The Crewe side came out fired up for the second half having had the “hairdryer” at half-time.
Wire failed to deal with a corner and the ball was bundled home for Crewe to pull one back. And it wasn’t too long before the hosts equalized – a 30-yard drive surprised everyone and nestled in the Warrington net.
The small crowd now sounded suitably entertained. The game had become more even during the middle section of the second half, but with time ticking away Warrington pressed and Danny Bruce, having picked himself up
for the umpteenth time, beat the full-back and placed a delightful cross with the outside of his boot into the path of Rhys Coogan who, unfortunately, could not connect cleanly and saw his golden opportunity
fly past the post.
It wasn’t too long, however, before Bandell moved the ball on to his left foot and struck Town’s third down to the keeper’s left.
Five minutes remained and Crewe pressed for their equalizer – winning corners and firing wide. Then, several minutes into injury-time, Wire failed to clear a corner and the ball dropped just over the line for
a second equalizer and the final whistle, at which peace ensued.
It was an entertaining fixture which saw the Yellows play some outstanding passing football on an excellently manicured surface, and a Crewe side revitalised after the break to create an exciting contest.
Warrington: Vaughan, Cook, Cunliffe (Ford), Emson, Everson, Turner (Coogan), Houghton, Bibby (Williams), Bruce, Bandell, Glass.
