Town get back to winning ways

WARRINGTON Town got back to winning ways after two consecutive defeats, with 2-1 victory over plucky Harrogate Railway Athletic at Station View.
A first Wire goal from Liam Dawson and a Jay McCarten header rendered a late tap in from Nathan Cartman a consolation for the hosts as Warrington recorded a 16th triumph of a long season.
Warrington started like a hurricane; early pressure yielded the first goal after just four minutes. Liam Dawson picked the ball up from Phil Mooney on the edge of the Harrogate area and manoeuvred himself outside of a tight spot before unleashing a powerful left footed drive which flashed past home goalkeeper, Sam Dobbs, who had no chance.
Just five minutes had passed before the ball was in the Harrogate net again, via the head of centre half, James McCarten. A quick counter from Dawson, Mooney and Ciaran Kilheeney saw the latter fire Dawson’s cross goal bound, forcing an excellent point blank stop from Dobbs. From the resultant corner, David Mannix swung the ball into a dangerous area and McCarten leapt highest to nod into the top corner and double Warrington’s early advantage.
The game slipped into equilibrium with both sides cancelling each other after the hosts regained some composure. It wasn’t until five minutes before the break when they had their first testing effort: Nathan Cartman, who was at the heart of everything good in their play, nodded inches wide when in space in Wire’s penalty area. Shaun Reid’s side, however, kept their clean sheet intact heading into the interval.
The second half followed much the same pattern as the first with Harrogate dictating a large proportion of the play. They particularly dominated the wide areas with cross after cross flying across the Yellows box. Reid introduced fresh legs in the form of three youth squad members; Dylan Glass, Jack West and Chris Bandell enjoyed a run out at Station View and Glass almost added to his solitary Warrington goal so far, his first time left footed volleys trickling just wide of the far post.
The impact of Glass and Bandell was mostly felt on the counter attack as Warrington were being pinned back in their own half by their resilient hosts. Some last ditch defending from Mooney and skipper, Peter Dogan, prevented Harrogate from grabbing an earlier goal but Warrington were of an equal threat at the other end. Phil Mooney and Bandell combined to force Dobbs into a save and five minutes later, Bandell tested the shot stopper from twenty yards.
With four minutes to go, though, Rail finally got their deserved consolation strike. Glass was found hesitating on passes just inside his own half and Colin Hunter nicked possession and Harrogate were on the attack once again. Hunter played in Danny Hull who calmly rolled the ball across the face of the goal and Cartman slid in to beat Phil Davies and tap into an empty net.
Mooney had an opportunity to seal the deal but he nodded a Glass cross over the bar when it looked easier to score but the Yellows survived a valiant Rail fight back and the first of four trips to Yorkshire, ended in success.
