Warrington's lasting peace legacy

0

TWENTY years ago Warrington suffered it’s darkest day in modern history, when two terrorist bombs went off in Bridge Street, claiming the lives of two young innocent boys and injuring more than 50 shoppers.
The response from Warrington and the families affected helped change the shape of history, as the strong message of peace and reconciliation helped bring about the peace process, which over the years has helped improve the lives of thousands of people.
I witnessed the aftermath of the bombing first hand as a young reporter and over the past two decades have been actively involved in helping promote the great work which has followed on from that dark day in March 1993.
As Warrington remembers that day I would like to publicly thank Colin and Wendy Parry for their ongoing work which is helping transform lives, while also not forgetting the family and friends of young Johnathan Ball and all those others who had their lives changed forever on that terrible day in our town’s history.
But while Warrington suffered at the hands of terrorism it came back a stronger and better place and one we can all be proud of when it comes to peace and reconciliation.
The hard work continues and it is vital that, as a town, we continue to support the good work of the Peace Centre, which has certainly become a living memorial to the two boys who lost their lives in such terrible circumstances.
