WARRINGTON Town extended their unbeaten run of league games to six in a goaless draw at 5th placed Ramsbottom.
Manger Shaun Reid making two changes to the starting line up handing a debut to recent signing Mark Beesley, starting up front in place of John Miles, with Ash Ruane replacing the suspended Peter Dogan.
Both sides began the game cautiously, looking to test each other out initially, in this, the first encounter between the two sides since February 2004.
The first chance of the game, fell to Ruane, who saw his powerful shot saved by the legs of Ramsbottom keeper Grant Shenton, before midfielder Phil Mooney saw his cross cum shot tipped over by a frantically back pedalling Shenton.
Town began to get on top, with Beesley forcing a good save from Shenton, before lively winger Allan Collins shot the wrong side of the upright. Gradually, the home side began to turn their possession into chances, with midfielder Phil Edghill forcing a flying save from Town keeper Andy Robertson. Town were forced into a change of system, when Ash Ruane was forced to leave the field injured in the 34th minute, to be replaced by Lee McEvilly.
Following this change of system, Ramsbottom winger Phil Dean came more to the fore for the home side, his forceful runs causing consternation in the Town rearguard, however, a lack of a final pass, often let down the speedy winger. Town had a great chance to open the scoring before half time, McEvilly getting in behind the Ramsbottom defence only to shoot weakly at Shenton when well placed. The last chance of the half falling to Ramsbottom striker Kieron Pickup, who sliced over the bar when well placed in the Town penalty area.
The home side came out and immediately look to take the game to Town, Dean being very instrumental in proceedings, shooting straight at Robertson early on, before shooting over when well placed soon afterwards.
It took until just after the hour for Town to have a meaningful chance of the Ramsbottom goal, winger Allan Collins, seeing his shot from the edge of the penalty area well saved by Shenton. As the game wore on, it became more open, Dean forcing a save from Robertson soon afterwards, as both sides went in search of an opening goal. Ramsbottom went close when striker Lee Gaskell went close, shooting narrowly wide from Grant Spencer’s excellent cross, before Collins shot weakly at Shenton after a mazy run saw him get a yard of space in a packed penalty area.
A number of substitutes from both sides introduced fresh legs into the game, and added an impetus to the game. Town midfielder Michael Reid was next to go close for Town, shooting wide from the edge of the penalty area before McEvilly once again shot weakly at Shenton. As the game wore down, the frantic pace continued but neither side created a chance of any merit, the closest Town came was a header from Collins, which was straight at Shenton, before, right at the death, Ramsbottom midfielder Gary Stopforth headed wide when he should have forced Robertson into a save.
