THE cold snap has prompted police to again warn motorists in Warrington of the risk they take if they leave their cars unattended while they are defrosting.
Opportunist thieves target drivers who leave their cars with the engine running to defrost the windscreens.
Detective Chief Inspector Brian Roberts said: The arrival of frost-filled mornings normally brings a series of de-frosting type thefts. Thieves target cars which have been left with their engines running to defrost the windscreens.”
The message police is simple – ever leave keys in the ignition and doors unlocked when a car is unattended, even if it is only for a couple of minutes.
Police also urge drivers to be sensible and defrost their screens before moving off, because driving with only a few inches of the windscreen clear is dangerous.
Another warning relates to insurance – motorists whose cars are stolen while unattended and with the keys in the ignition may find they are not covered because insurers can argue that reasonable care has not been taken.
