TEN men Warrington Town marched on in the F.A Cup as they over came a determined North West Counties outfit Maine Road 1-0 at the Abacus Solicitors’ Community Stadium.
A wonder goal from Liam Shipton 10 minutes from time, after Skipper Peter Dogan had been red carded for a second booking early on in the second half, was enough to carry Warrington through into the second qualifying round.
Backed by Warrington Wolves’ Wembley heroes Chris Riley and Paul Wood, who were special guests ast the game, Town overcame the lazer blue side winning a tough encounter.
Maine Road gave a good account of themselves early doors but it was the home side who dealt with the heat better in the second period.
Lee McEvilly went close on 18 minutes when his shot was well saved by the visiting keeper. The visitors looked dangerous throughout the first half but were kept at bay by an inform Adam Judge.
The second period started on a downer as captain Dogan was dismissed following a challenge in central midfield. It was his second yellow card of the game leaving town with 10 men for 40 minutes of the second period.
On the hour, McEvilly was replaced by Kevin Townson who returned from injury to help give the home side some fresh fire power upfront. Townson went close within minutes of coming into the game but Warrington made the breakthrough with just 10 minutes remaining.
Shipton hit a 22 yard shot from the edge of the box that flew into the top left hand corner of the net sending the home fans, in a good sized crowd, wild.
Maine Road pushed for an equaliser but Warrington’s strong defence kept their cool to progress through to the next round.
