BOOMING Warrington – named earlier this week as the top town in Britain for economic growth over the last 100 years – now has a population of 202,200.
The figure has emerged from last year’s national Census – and reveals a 5.8 per cent increase since the last Census in 2001.
Overall, the population of England and Wales has now reached a record 56.1 million.
The Census results provide a detailed range of information about people and places including population and household figures.
Results relate to information provided on Census night, March 27, last year.
In Warrington, 96 per cent of Census forms were returned.
They showed that Warrington has 1,600 more women than men – 101,900 women and 100,300 men, making a total of 202,200.
The town has 85,100 households and there is an average of 11.1 people living in each hectare.
Nearly a quarter of the resident population is aged 0 to 19 years – 24.1 per cent, slightly more than the national average.
More than half the resident population are aged 20 to 64 years – 60 per cent compared to 59.6 per cent nationally.
Nearly one in six residents are aged 65 years or over – 15.9 per cent compared to 16.4 per cent nationally.
Persons aged 45 to 49 years make up the largest age group, accounting for 8.2 per cent of the population.
Nationally, around 25 million households were involved in the Census.
Cllr Hitesh Patel (pictured), the borough council’s executive member for personnel and communications, said: “The Census results are very interesting as they help paint a picture of the place we live in. They are also very important as the information and data that it generates is extremely useful to organisations such as the council as we can use it to make sure that the local services that people rely on, such as transport, housing, schools and hospitals, can be provided where they are needed and to plan properly before the future.”
