THE Queen is to visit Warrington in May, as part of her regional tours to mark her Diamond Jubilee.
Borough Council chiefs today reacted with delight to the news.
Leader of the council Terry O’Neill said: “We are thrilled that Warrington has been selected as one of the destinations for HM The Queen to visit during her Diamond Jubilee year.
“We have a strong tradition as a town of putting on a wonderful display for our VIP visitors and I’m sure that we will pull out all the stops to ensure that Her Majesty receives the very warmest welcome in 2012.
“It is a real honour that we will be able to showcase some of the things that make Warrington great, and to do that as part of the Jubilee celebrations.”
Details of the Queen’s itinerary are not yet known – but one possibility is that she could visit the Orford Park “sports village” project.
The visit will be included in a tour of the North West on May 16 and 17.
It will be the Queen’s third visit to Warrington. In 1968, she visited Bridge Street to see a renovation scheme masterminded by Warrington Civic Society and in 1979 she visited the Golden Square shopping centre.

And what will it cost to “pull out all the stops” for this representative of an anachronistic institution that has no place in a 21st century democracy?

Anachronistic or not, this story is the best read of the day, despite only being published at mid-day!
No doubt there will be a run on white paint.
I just hope that they fly her in, that way she won’t see the grotty gateways to the town. It will be a tad embarrassing if there is an accident on the motorway and the town becomes gridlocked.
Perhaps Nick Tessla can have a word in her shell like and tell her what he thinks about the Royal Family.
I think Nick should emigrate to a country more suiting his desires, Zimbabwe might be a good fit. We are being given an opportunity to celebrate an historic occasion and should join in with it. Republican curmudgeons can sod off.
