OIL paintings from the collection at Warrington Museum are among more than 1,000 pictures that have gone online for the first time.
All oil paintings in public ownership in Cheshire have been placed on the Your Paintings website - www.bbc.co.uk/yourpaintings.
Your Paintings is an ongoing project that aims to eventually put all publicly owned oil paintings on show in a complete online catalogue of all the national paintings.
About 1,100 paintings from Cheshire have gone on show, including works by Dobson, Fuseli, John Martin, Lely, Lawrence, Reynolds and Turner.
Major collections such as those at Warrington Museum are Art Gallery, Grosvenor Museum and Tabley House are featured alongside smaller collections including Halton Borough Council, the National Waterways Museum and the University of Chester.
Together the paintings provide a unique insight into the history and artistic heritage of Cheshire.
To help identify and catalogue what can be seen in each painting, the public is
being invited to "tag" the nation's paintings.
Tagging is fun, easy and the results will allow future users of the Your Paintings website to find paintings of subjects that interest them. Your Paintings Tagger is at http://tagger.thepcf.org.uk
Craig Sherwood, documentation access officer, Warrington Museum and Art Gallery, said: "Warrington Museum and Art Gallery aims to make its collections as accessible as possible but even though we regularly rotate the works on show, some items are still only displayed infrequently."
