Town draw a blank

WARRINGTON Town played out a goalless draw, against local rivals, Leigh Genesis at Cantilever Park last night, only their second draw of the season.
Both teams started slowly, the first chance of the game falling to striker Tony Evans, whose shot was well saved by Leigh keeper Stephen Drench. Whilst the game was played mostly in midfield there were a few opportunities for both sides that could have lead to a goal. Chris Gahgan lobbing narrowly wide for Town and a last gasp challenge by defender Levi Kennedy denying Leigh a great shooting chance.
The visitors should have gone ahead in the 29th minute, when striker Jordan Stepien saw his shot cleared off the line by captain Mike Tomlinson, after good work by midfielder Jamie Baguley. They should have gone ahead in the 37th minute, too, when midfielder Jack Dorney somehow put his header wide when well placed.
Town started the second half brighter, Jimmy McCarthy’s run and shot tipped over the bar by Drench, and soon after the same player headed over the crossbar as Town pressed forward looking for a goal. The visitors had their chance but saw their best effort of the half from Tom Ince go straight into the side netting. Tony Evans was next to go close for Town, seeing his header go narrowly wide of the target. Town’s best chance of the match fell to substitute Mike Grogan late on, who was denied by an excellent last gasp challenge when through on goal. Neither side could fashion a goal late in the game and the game fizzled out into a draw, a deserved result for both teams.
Manager Joey Dunn will be hoping new signing Gavin Salmon can help Town end their mini goal-scoring drought and the striker is expected to make his debut at AFC Fylde on Saturday.
