WARRINGTON Wolves’ boss Tony Smith is blending experience and youth for The Boxing Day derby with Widnes.
First team regulars including Richie Myler, Ben Harrison, Ryan Atkins, Matty Blythe, Chris Riley, Mike Cooper and Mickey Higham are joined by a number of younger players who have stepped up to the first team squad this season.
But those involved in international duty including Skipper Adrian Morley and second rower Benny Westwood and Wales skipper Lee Briers are all rested alongside overseas stars Michael and Joel Monaghan.
Smith said: “It’s fantastic that Widnes are back in Super League and it creates a local derby for us once again. I’m sure they’ll be a lot of competitiveness in the game on Boxing Day and in all the games we play against them in the future. This can only be a positive thing for Rugby League in this part of the world.”
Smith has named a 25-man squad for this fixture giving fans the chance to see first-team regulars, new faces and young stars of the future in action.
He said: “Pre-season has been great so far with a lot of hard work and good fun with all players ripping in as you would expect at this time of year. There’s a lot of competition for places and the new faces and young players have already brought a lot of enthusiasm to the side many of which you’ll get to see at some stage during the game on Boxing Day.”
