Detective's relentless pursuit of robber

A WARRINGTON police officer was so relentless in his pursuit of a woman who attacked an 85-year-old war veteran in his own home that he studied law in his own time to persuade reluctant prosecutors to act.
Detective Constable Stephen Hopkins’ determination eventually persuaded the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to take action – and the culprit was jailed for four years.
Now DC Hopkins has been nominated and short listed for an award at the Police Federation national detective awards.
Second World War veteran Edwin Stout was attacked and robbed in his own home.
He never really recovered from the shock of the attack and five months later died in a care home.
Nineteen months after the event, forensic evidence linked the woman to the offence. The CPS would not pursue the prosecution because the only witness, Mr Stout, was by this time deceased.
DC Hopkins did his own research, purchased law books and researched European and UK law – all in his own time.
He even contacted a Cambridge University law professor and compiled a 17-page dossier explaining why the CPS could pursue the case.
The CPS eventually changed their mind and last year the woman pleaded guilty and was jailed for four years.
Simon Roberts, chairman of the Cheshire Police Federation, said: “This investigation is a great example of truly outstanding police work.
“DC Hopkins has been nominated and short listed for an award at the Police Federation national detective awards.
“Police forces up and down the country are being forced to reduce officer numbers, this will include detectives. These awards will enable us to celebrate the dedication and hard work officers are doing up and down the country to bring dangerous criminals to justice.”
