Slow down on motorways – police

POLICE in Cheshire recorded 250 drivers travelling at well above the 70mph limit on the M6 – with the fasted clocked at 107mph.
They are appealing to motorists to slow down now that winter weather has arrived.
Inspector Liz Cunningham, officer in charge of the Cheshire Police Motorway Unit said: “During winter months drivers need to be aware of difficult driving conditions, as road surfaces are more likely to be wet and flying spray is a visibility hazard.
“Driving in the dark, motorists may run into patches of mist or fog and reducing speed allows time to adjust to such weather conditions. Allowing a two second gap between a vehicle and the one in font will drastically reduce the risk of collisions and make driving safer.”
She added: “While drivers continue to flout the speed limit Cheshire Police will continue to carry out speed detection operations. The safety of road users is our primary concern and the drivers caught speeding during this check on the M6 will be hearing from us. Our hope is that drivers will heed our advice, as safer driving prevents the trauma of collisions and saves drivers from fines and endorsements on their licence.”

  1. Even if the motorway is empty, the weather was clear and sunny and the road was as dry as a bone, there is no excuse for anyone other than Police or ambulances attending to emergencies clocking 107 mph. As for the other 249, it is a sad and inescapable fact that by the law of averages that number will include the usual percentage of dimwit drivers.
