WARRINGTON Wolves’ second rower Tyrone McCarthy has agreed a contract extension with the club.
McCarthy, 23, has agreed a two-year deal keeping him at the club until November 2013.
He is an example of the local talent coming through the club having benefitted from the youth development system and SquadBuilder.
He has gained valuable experience in recent times on dual registration at Leigh Centurions and also on loan with Super League side Wakefield last season playing in seven matches. The 2011 season saw Tyrone make several appearances for the under 20s and three for the first team against Wakefield, Salford and Bradford.
Following his first team debut back in 2009 Tyrone has now made 11 appearances touching down for two tries. His debut was against Wigan Warriors in the league backed up by a substitute appearance in the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final at Wembley that year.
The international season saw Tyrone selected to play for Ireland in this year’s European Test Series as he continues to develop his game and he was named Ireland’s Player of the Series.
McCarthy said: “I have always wanted to play for Warrington so to get another contract is great and hopefully I can now kick on and use it to progress. I made my debut a couple of years ago and haven’t yet had the game time I would have hoped for but hopefully I will now get the opportunity to do so.”
He added: “I felt my performances improve by getting some consecutive game time at Wakefield and hopefully Tony’s seen that and I can bring that through at Warrington to get a few more first team games here. The time gave me a bit of confidence too, to believe that I am good enough at that level.”
McCarthy is also concentrating on work off the pitch putting something back into the club completing a Masters Degree in Sports Psychology.
“I now help coach the scholarship and I feel this course may help me further down the line. Hopefully I can also give something back to the club through coaching the young lads whilst gaining a few pointers myself on this side of sport.”
His role as ambassador at the University of Chester builds on this. “This entails me being a role model between the club and the university promoting further education whilst participating in sport. I’ll be in contact with the scholarship players when they get to the stage to make decisions regarding education and hopefully I can be a proven example that you can do both.”
