Town salvage point

A late goal from substitute Jamie Henders salvaged a point for Warrington Town in a 2-2 draw with Wakefield at Cantilever Park.
The game started with neither side in control and it was the visitors who were first to go close to opening the scoring, midfielder Nick Hegarty, seeing his curling header, well tipped over by Chris Oldfield in the Town goal, before fellow midfielder Brandon Kane headed wide when well placed.
Town soon got into the game, striker Anthony Hickey being denied by a good last gasp challenge, before River Humphries saw his rising shot force a fine flying save from Wakefield custodian Jordan Yorath.
Just before the quarter hour, the visitors should have taken the lead, when Wakefield striker Luke Malcher saw his shot smack back off the underside of the crossbar, when it appeared easier to score, following a goalmouth scramble.
A minute later, the visitors were awarded a spot kick, after River Humphries was adjudged to have fouled 6′ 8″ striker Tom Denton in the penalty area. The same player stepping up to send Oldfield the wrong way and give Wakefield the lead. Town looked to get back into the game, and five minutes later, Town themselves were awarded a penalty for a push on midfielder Sam Finley in the penalty area. Hickey stepping up to send Yorath the wrong way and equalise for Town.
Warrington gradually began to take control of the game, with winger Chris Gahgan seeing his angled shot hit the upright from close range, before striker Jack McGowan saw his header, from an excellent Liam Shipton cross, go into the side netting.
Just after the half hour, the visitors were awarded a second penalty, when Humphries tripped Malcher in the box. Denton once again stepped up to score, despite the best efforts of Oldfield, who narrowly missed making the save. Once again Town went looking for an equaliser, with central defender Tom Hardwick going closest for Town, seeing his long range free kick go just over the visitors crossbar
The second half began with Town going close through Hickey, who saw his glancing header go narrowly wide of the upright. Town were making the best chances of the two sides, with Matt Doughty’s free kick being headed narrowly wide of his own goal by Wakefield defender Luke Danville, before McGowan was denied by the on rushing Yorath when well placed.
Wakefield should have gone further ahead just after the hour, with Kane heading over once again when well placed. Midfielder Paddy McGuire soon forced a save out of Oldfield with a fine free kick. As time pressed on, and with all three substitutes having been introduced, Town continued to search for an equaliser, with Hickey just failing to reach a Finley throughball before Yorath, while midfielder Kyle Hamid shot wide from the edge of the penalty area. Town went close to scoring, when Hickey, having been played through, was denied by an excellent last gasp challenge by central defender Danville. With time running out, Town got the equaliser their play deserved, Henders being on hand to blast home, after Chris Thompson’s shot was saved at close range by Yorath, following excellent build up play by Finley.
Despite the visitors time wasting, Town were unable to find a winner in the injury time played by the referee.
Next up for Warrington is a tricky trip to table topping Sheffield in the FA Trophy on Saturday when the Wire will be without suspended midfielder Sam Finley.
