WARRINGTON Town put Saturday’s nightmare defeat at Garforth behind them with a 1-0 victory over near neighbours Runcorn Linnets in the Cheshire Cup.
Manager Joey Dunn make several changes to the starting line up, including a starting debut to youngster Nick Jackson in place of Mike Duffy at right back.
It was Town who started the game brightest, scoring the only goal of the game in the 3rd minute. River Humphries (pictured above) seeing his header from a corner, headed in by striker Jack McGowan from close range. Town were creating the best chances of the game, midfielder Sam Finley seeing his forceful run into the penalty area, barely denied by a last gasp challenge.
The home sides first chance of the game fell to winger Sean Pearson, in the 22nd minute, who shot wide of the target when well placed. Barely a minute later Finley forced a fine save from Runcorn’s stand in keeper Andrew Hewitt. Just before half time, Town went close to adding to to their lead, when McGowan saw his powerful drive smack away off the upright, with Liam Shipton (pictured below) being ruled offside when following up.

Town started the second half brightest of the two sides, and indeed, should have gone further ahead five minutes into the half, when Hickey (pictured right) collected a pass from McGowan, after hesitancy in the home defence, before shooting narrowly over the cross bar.
Winger Michael Brown was next to go close for Town, seeing his drive go over the bar, as Town pushed forward looking for a second goal to kill the game off. The home side had their best chance of the match soon after, winger Phil Holland seeing his drive go across the face of the goal, with no one able to get a touch on the ball.
Finley went close soon after, shooting straight at Hewitt from the edge of the penalty area. With under twenty minutes to go, Town went close to scoring once again, Hickey seeing his powerful drive saved by Hewitt, only to see the ball rebound onto the crossbar and away to safety.
Barely a minute later, Town throught they had gone further ahead, when Tom Hardwick drove home a quick free kick, only to see the referee recall the play.
With two minutes left in the game, the home side were reduced to 10 men, when full back Neil Murphy saw red for a two footed lunge on livewire midfielder Sam Finley.
Barely a minute later, Hewitt was forced into a fine save to deny Town Captain’s Tom Hardwick’s excellent diving header.
Finley had the last chance of the game, seeing his curling effort palmed away by Hewitt.
