A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a series of fires early this morning in Warrington.
The man, aged 22 and local to the Warrington area, was arrested at around midday today.
His arrest follows a series of fires in the Bewsey area, the first of which was reported at just after 2am this morning at a golf shop on Lovely Lane.
Police and fire services attended and two people were rescued from a flat above the shop by the fire service.
They were taken to hospital for a check up, but were not seriously injured.
At 2.20 a.m. emergency services were made aware of a further fire at nearby Regency Court. A wheelie bin appeared to have been set alight and put against a residential property, causing the property to catch fire.
A gas pipe within the property ignited and as a result of this and as a precautionary measure a number of houses on either side of the property were evacuated.
A short time later, two further fires were reported in the area – one on Haryngton Avenue and another Lovely Lane.
There were no serious injuries as a result of the incidents, and no reported casualties other than the two people rescued by the Fire Service following the initial incident.
Lovely Lane reopened at 1pm today after scene examination had been completed by police and fire officers.
Police would like to re-assure the community that all the incidents reported were swiftly dealt with and are now under control.
Meanwhile, police are appealing to the community to come forward with any information they have which could assist the investigation, or to anyone out and about in Bewsey last night who may have seen anything of relevance to make contact with them.
Anyone who can assist should contact Warrington CID on 0845 458 0000.
Alternatively, information can be left anonymously on the Crimestoppers hotline 0800 555 111.
The man arrested is now being questioned by detectives.
