Henders double as Town triumph

WARRINGTON Town took on North West Counties League side Irlam in a pre-season friendly, the first game on the new Cantilever Park pitch.
New striker Jamie Henders (pictured right) was on target twice but missed out on a hat-trick as he blasted an injury time penalty over the cross bar.
Town playing a number of triallists and some of last seasons squad, started brightest and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 20th minute, Henders slamming home past Irlam keeper Jamie Brewer from outside of the penalty area.
Just three minutes later, Town extended their lead, Henders springing the Irlam offside trap to bear down on goal before squaring the ball to fellow striker Chris Thompson, who made no mistake with the finish from six yards. Town, who were without an established goalkeeper, due to work commitments and holidays, were not unduly troubled by the Irlam attack, which included former Town striker Liam Sweeney. The closest the visitors got to scoring was when Irlam striker Danny McLoughlin saw his lobbed effort rebound back off the crossbar into the hands of stand in keeper Liam Johnson.
The second half saw a number of subs introduced by Town, these included first team regulars Tom Hardwick, Sam Finley and Chris Gahgan. This gave Town a fresh impetus going forward and looked dangerous every time they went forward with the ball. Irlam got back into the game just after the hour when winger Adam Pegg curled in a shot from outside of the penalty area following a corner.
The visitors went close to equalising soon after when midfielder Dean Burgess shot across the face of Johnson’s goal. Just when the visitors looked like they were getting back into it, Henders popped up with his fourth goal in pre season, with an angled drive from well outside of the penalty area, which gave Brewer no chance. In injury time, Town were awarded a penalty after a foul on striker Chris Gahgan, Henders stepped up, looking to complete his hat trick, but blasted his penalty high over the bar.

Town: Johnson, Duffy, Humphreys, Wright, Ness, Wade, Michael Jukes, Hamid, Thompson, Henders, Brown, Subs all used: Finely, Hardwick, Gahgan, James Ralphs, Sam Pierce, Luke O’Mahoney, Josh Kavanagh, Nick Jackson
