Major roadworks for town centre

MAJOR roadworks are set to take place from Saturday August 6, on the Bridgefoot roundabout in Warrington town centre.
The work is expected to take one week to complete and will result in weekend and overnight lane closures with temporary diversions in place.
The weekend closure will be from 6am on the Saturday to midnight on the Sunday to allow resurfacing of the westbound lane over the bridge – towards Wilson Patten Street. Northbound and eastbound routes will remain open.
This will mean fans travelling from Wigan and St Helens to the Challenge Cup semi-final taking place at 4.30pm on the Saturday will still be able to enter the town from the northbound route. Traffic will also be able to approach Bridgefoot from the south and head north onto Mersey Street to get to the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Weekday night closures will be in place from 9pm to 5am to allow resurfacing work on the northbound lane over the bridge – towards Mersey Street – but all other routes will remain open.
The bus, taxi and cycle lanes will be closed during the above periods. An alternative pedestrian access route will be in place.
United Utilities will be carrying out water main renewal works at the same time.
Cllr Linda Dirir, (right) the borough council’s executive member for highways, transportation and climate change, said: “These roadworks are essential to the maintenance of our roads and will be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible. It is good news that United Utilities are doing their work on water mains at the same time as this will minimise any disruption caused by road closures.”
A council spokesman added: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the roadworks.”

  2. You don’t have to be mad to work for WBC but it surely helps! What a time to be doing major road works when the Rugby Club is staging a prestigious Rugby Match. What will the visitng supporters think of the Town? Do the WBC Officers not live in the real world and do they know nothing of these large events taking place within the Town?
