MORE than 3,000 walkers, accompanied by up to 10 marching bands took to town centre streets today as part of what is believed to be the 177th Warrington Walking Day.
The centre of Warrington was sealed off to traffic from around 9.30am and although most shops remained open, some stayed closed until after the Walk had finished.
The Walk started from the Town Hall at 10.30am, when the Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr and Mrs Mike Biggin, took the salute from a raised dais in front of the famous Golden Gates.
Special guests incliuded the Mayor from Warrington’s twin town of Hilden in Germany.
But many churches, schools and other organisations had been on the move earlier, walking in procession to the town centre to congregate on the Town Hall lawn.
The weather forecast stayed true, with no rain falling and the sun shining much of the time .
The procession was headed as usual by a contingent from Warrington Parish Church and St John’s Mission Church, followed by St Mary’s RC Church.
