TRAINING during the year paid off for Thelwall Junior School when they returned as champions from a national competition.
The team, from the school in Thelwall New Road, won the British Basketball Hoops 4 Health national final in Birmingham and became National Junior Basketball Champions.
Headteacher Susan Robinson said the school had basketball training during the year.
She said: “Following this they entered a basketball team into a local Warrington Primary School competition and then the regional finals in Chester. After winning both these competitions they were then selected to represent our region in the national finals.”
The team with school staff, parents and Jamie Vermiglio, Cheshire Jets coach, travelled to the finals to offer support, when the team competed against six others.
The team had to play all the other schools and won all their six games, going on to win the final 12-8. They received a cup and gold medals for each team player. The school will also receive a golden basketball as another memento.
Mrs Robinson said: “This has been a marvellous experience for the children representing our school in the BBL Hoops 4 Health competition. Many people have been into school to help and support the pupils in developing their basketball skills.
“Cheshire Jets have played a significant role sending in coaches to develop these skills as well as raise the awareness of basketball within the community. Many children across school have benefited from the programme and have taken a greater interest in the sport.”
